How do I conduct the most effective search?

For American Physicians (or Green Card holders)

A. Conduct your own search first, asking peers, colleagues, friends and family.
B.
Work with at least 3 reputable companies.

For Foreign Medical Graduates (with VISA issues)

A. conduct your search through a reputable company that has an established track record.
B. Work with and/or retain a reputable law firm (Immigration attorney).
C. Seek assurance that the company that is conducting your search knows and understands your special needs.
D. Be prepared to enter additional program to retain status if you begin your search with one year or less before finishing your program. A waiver process is quite time consuming and does not even begin until you sign a contract.

How do I find the right company to conduct my search?

Make sure that you speak directly to the person that will be representing you. They should be willing to take the time to answer your questions and consult with you over the phone. Ask for references.

What is a medically underserved area (which qualifies for a waiver)?

Medically underserved areas which would qualify for waivers are defined by boundaries that are either counties or census tracks, which have a statistically low doctor-to-population ratio. The qualifying numbers vary from state to state. For example: 1 doctor to 3000 people or more.

Underserved Area Terms

HPSA = Health Professional Service Area
HPSA = POP Groups
MUA = Medically Underserved Area
MUP = Medically Underserved Population

What is a sponsor?

There are four (4) organizations that can sponsor a waiver:
1) State - Provided they have a program in force
2) ARC - Where applicable
3) HHS
4_Veteran Administration (VA)

When is the best time to begin my job search?

Typically a job search should begin 10 to 14 months before the completion of your program.

How long should I wait between interviews?

If, after interviewing, a contract is not offered within one week, the employer is usually uncertain and may be conducting additional interviews. At that time your search should be reinstated as a  precautionary measure.

What should I do while my search is being conducted?

A. You too, should actively search
B. Stay in close contact with the company conducting the search
C. Prepare yourself for a successful interview
D. Have additional information  and references (personal and professional) if and when needed.

What should I do once my contract is signed?

If you are an American born/trained physician and/or Green Card holder...Celebrate!
If you are a physician with waiver issues...assist future employer, attorney and search firm as best you can. Stay in contact with your attorney.
